Disable USB devices on a Network

Interesting to know how many users in a company can infect a network by attaching a USB device. The risk has been out for a while and even though you can apply this fix. It still doesn't guarantee that it will work all the time.

with Compliments to www.howtodothings.com

Click Start Menu > go to run command and type "regedit" without quotes. Registry Editor will open.
Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder then SYSTEM >CURRENT CONTROLL SET > SERVICES >USBstor, located at the left pane.
Find "Start" in the right pane with the blue icon.
Double click "Start". A box titled "Edit DWORD value" will open.
Write down "4" in the "Value Data" Field. Illustration 1.1
Click OK and then close the Registry Editor.

Your USB flash drive is now disabled. Whenever you insert a flash drive, Windows won't detect it and will not open it.

To enable it again, repeat steps 1 through 4 and then change the value to 3. The default value for enabling a USB flash drive is 3.

This is how you do it as per PCworld.com

Simplaris Blogcast
What a pain it is to spend all that time writing a blog post...and then have to manually add it as a link in your feed using Facebook's "Post Link" feature. Make it simple--or rather, automated--by using Simplaris Blogcast. With this app, you simply paste in the URL for your blog's XML or RSS feed, and just like an RSS reader, Blogcast pulls in the most recent headlines and a digest (you decide how long) once a day (or immediately, depending on what blogging software you use). And for the truly lazy, it doesn't even have to be your own blog: Blogcast works with any feed you give it; but, alas, you can only bring in one feed at a time.

Windows Icon Volume Missing

Missing the Windows Icon Volume button.
Hope this information will help you with help from en.allexperts.com

SYMPTOMS
On a Windows XP-based computer, you may experience one or both of the following behaviors: • The Volume icon is no longer displayed in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar.
• When you try to add the volume control icon to the notification area (in the Sounds and Audio Devices utility in Control Panel, click to select the Place volume icon in the taskbar check box on the Volume tab), you receive the following error message:
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
As a result, you cannot start the Volume Control program and adjust the volume and sound level settings of your computer.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Sndvol32.exe file is damaged or missing.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP compact disc to the system_root\System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files are located (generally C:\Windows):
CD-ROM drive:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe

Note that there is a space between "ex_" and "system_root" in this command.

For example, if your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive E, and the folder that contains the Windows system files is C:\Windows, type the following lines at the command prompt (pressing ENTER after each line):
e:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
5. Type exit to quit the command prompt.
6. Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is displayed in the notification area (if you selected this option).

Don't Do it to Windows

Yes the following is a waste of time on Windows.
It's your choice on believing or not.

1- Vista multiple core improves boot time
There is an option in Msconfig utility that lets you set the number of processors for boot time and by default it's set to off.

2- Clearing prefetch directory (or cache) improves start time
Actually all this does in most cases is extends the boot time.

3- Disabling QoS and IPv6 will improve bandwidth and web performance
I still can't find any good enough reason to do so.

4- Turning off System Restore improves performance
I wouldn't chance risking my backups.

5- Clearing out cached and temp files improves performance, especially in web browser.

6- Disabling the last access time stamp will boost performance.
I wouldn't suggest on doing this because one day this might just help you resolve a known problem.

6/26/09

Do It to Windows

Here are a few Windows tweaks that are worth doing

Do
1- Disabling XP's indexing saves on performance

2- In Vista write caching will improve SATA drive performance
To do this go to Explorer right click drive you want to speed up and select
properties -> click Hardware tab and -> select properties -> Policies tab and check both of the boxes beneath "Optimize for performance"

3- Disable unused network connections will improve boot time.

4- Tweak virtual will improve performance
To do this go to the Control Panel -> Advance under performance click Settings -> Advanced. In Virtual memory module click change -> custom size then up both Initial and Maximum size to roughly double your amount of RAM. Click Set and ok.

5- Ready Boost will improve system performance

6- Eliminate the Recent Documents / Recent Items folder with a registry hack
In XP install TweakUI and browse to Explorer then uncheck Allow Recent Documents on Start Menu. In Vista right click the taskbar and click Start Menu tab and uncheck Store and display a list of recently opened files.

7- Turn off the Windows splash screen will save time off your boot.
In XP at the run prompt type msconfig -> click the boot.ini tab and select
the /NOGUIBOOT option. Vista is similar instead its select the No GUI Boot option.

8- Defragmenting your hard drive improves performance

6/25/09

Apple Mobile Me
To cancel in general, log in at www.me.com, go to Accounts, click the Account Options tab, and find the Cancel Account button.

Google
Sign in to Gmail, go to the Settings link, hit the Accounts tab, and go to Google Account Settings; this is the primary page for basic Google account settings. Click Edit (next to My Products).
You're now on the Delete a Product page. From here you can remove your accounts for Gmail.

Windows Live Search
There's an Account link at the bottom of most pages at Live.com, visible after you sign in. This page lets you edit your contact information, passwords and security questions, and more. At the bottom under Additional Options, you'll see the link for Close Account. If all goes well, you'll enter your password and that's it.

Yahoo
First, cancel any premium services with the company, such as Web hosting or selling. You'll find that on the Yahoo Billing Information page. After that, visit the Account Deletion page. You'll get a long page that spells out how this affects access to Yahoo services, and a notice that deactivation and deletion can take as long as 90 days, which Yahoo claims "is necessary to discourage users from engaging in fraudulent activity." And by canceling, someone else can come in and sign up using your old ID, though they won't be able to access any of your old data, of course.

Hopefully you'll be deleted.
